RULES

14th INTERNATIONAL DRUM SET COMPETITION

YOUNG DRUM HERO

7th – 8th October - Opole 2017

 

§ 1

 

 

14th International Drum Set Competition – Young Drum Hero will take place in October 2017 will be held at Frederic Chopin's Music School in Opole, Poland. The competition is organised as a part of 26thInternatioanl Drum Fest.

§2

The organizer of the event is the Polish Percussive Association, based in Opole, ul 1 Maja 19 (oficyna), 45-068. Partner and co-organiser is Perkusista Magazine and the owner of the Drumcover.pl

§ 3

The Competition is organised for drummers – amateurs, music schools and/or academies' students

§ 4

The Competition is devided into two age groups:

1st group – everyone who by the end of the 2017 is 16 or under 16years old

2nd group - everyone who by the end of the 2017 is 23 or under 23 years old

§5

Each contestant is obliged to:

1. fill in the application form available on the drumcover.pl website ( logging in is required )
2. upload a recording on the drumcover.pl website in file called Young Drum Hero
The recording has to include two pieces of music, either solo performances or with a band. Choice of thegenre of music is up to thge contestant. Both recordings should be in high quality.
The applications must be sent by 10th September 2017 the latest (date of upload
§ 6
At the preelimination stage the organisers decide which contestant qualifies to the Ist stage of the competiton.The verdict is based upon the recordings received. The organiser chooses up to 30 best performers from bothage groups who will be invited to the Ist stage of the competition.
§ 7
1. At the first stage of the competiton contestants will be judged by the jury called by the Organisers. The jurywill consist of leading polish and foreign drummers. The leader represents the jury throughout the competition.Contestants present up to 8 minutes of music. After the presentation the Jury will chose 5 best performersfrom each age group who will play in the final round.
2. At the final stage, the Jury called by the Director of the Artistic Education Centre will assess contestantsbased on their performance of two pieces – one solo performance and one with a backing track. Timewise,both presentations should not exceed 10 minutes.
§ 8
During the final of the compettion which will be held as a part of the 26th International Drum Fest, the jury willassess contestants based on musicality, accuracy, technique and interpretation.
§ 9
The organiser predicts prizes to be devided as follows:
Grand Prix,

1st place in the younger age group,

1st place in the uder 23's and possible honourable mention.

The Jury has a right to divide prizes as they prefer. Jury’s deliberation is confidential and decisions are final.
During deliberation Jury will not judge upon music genres presented by contestants, but only the level ofperformance based on thechnique, accuracy and musicality.
§ 10
The competition will be held in October 2017. The exact date will be published on www.drumfest.pl, www.youngrumhero.pl and www.drumcover.pl by 1 st October 2017. Everyone who applied will be informedvia e-mail.
§ 11
Each contestant will receive a participation diploma from the jury leader. Winners will receive prizes providedby sponsors.
§ 12
As an additional prize the organiser gives the opportunity to the winner.

MARK FORD (USA)

 

Mark Ford is the coordinator of percussion activities at The University

of North Texas in Denton, Texas and a Past-President of the Percussive

Arts Society. He is a marimba specialist and the coordinator of one of

the largest percussion programs in the United States at UNT. Ford

is an active performer on the marimba and he has been featured

throughout the United States at universities and music conferences.

Mark is also the Artistic Director for the annual Drum Fest Marimba/

Vibraphone Competition in Opole, Poland. He regularly performs

at International Music Festivals throughout Europe, Asia and South

America. With several marimba and percussion CDs to his credit,

Mark’s recordings have further established his dedication to excellence

in music. Ford’s solo marimba CDs, Stealing a Moment, Motion Beyond

and Polaris, have received outstanding reviews including The

Instrumentalist which stated Ford's performance is "superb and

his compositional style is equally outstanding." Mark has also recorded

two DVDs and a CD with Japanese virtuoso marimbist Keiko Abe and

the UNT Wind Symphony.

NEY ROSAURO (Brazil)

 

Ney Rosauro is recognized as one of the most original and

dynamic symphonic percussionists and composers today. 

As a composer he has published more than 100 pieces

for percussion as well as several method books. His compositions

are very popular worldwide and have been recorded by

internationally acclaimed artists such as Evelyn Glennie and the

London Symphony Orchestra. His Concerto for Marimba andOrchestra

has been performed by over 2,500 different orchestras worldwide,

and his ten solo CDs have received critical acclaim and been hailed by

percussionists and general music-lovers alike. Ney Rosauro has

appeared in concert solo, and as a soloist with orchestras, in more

than 45 different countries, including the most prestigious International

Percussion Festivals.

LUDWIG ALBERT (Belgium)

 

Internationally highly acclaimed as a virtuoso and devoted pedagogue,

Ludwig Albert belongs throughout the world as Belgian leading marimbist

and pioneer with the absolute topflight and is profiled as one of the most

successful marimbists and pedagogues of his generation. After obtaining

a First Prize for Percussion, the Superior Diploma percussion and

a Master degree specialisation marimba, he was profoundly shaping his

musical talent as first Belgian marimbist with the Japanese

marimba virtuoso Keiko Abe at the Toho Gakuan Music School in

Tokyo-Japan, and performed with her starting 1996 several concert

productions and –tours. Starting 1995, he searched for new

sound-combinations and founded his duo ‘Patrasche’ with the

combination of marimba and voice.  As true pioneers of this unique

combination, they developed a style of their own and could inspire

 nowadays several  artists and composers to create new music for

this strength.

ERIC SAMMUT (France)

 

Eric Sammut began his musical education studying piano,

and later attended percussion classes with Michel Ventula

at the National Regional Conservatory (NRC) in Toulouse. In 1989,

the same year that he received a unanimous First Prize as a student

of Francois Dupin and Georges Van Gucht, Eric Sammut

became principal percussionist with the Orchestre de l’Opéra National

de Lyon. In 1995, after receiving the First National Marimba Prize of

New York, he undertook a recital tour and gave masterclasses in the

United States, Europe and Asia. He began teaching marimba in Toulouse

in 1995, as well as at the NRC in Paris and the Royal Academy

of Music in London and Glasgow, in addition to being principal

percussionist with the Orchestre de Paris.

NICHOLAS WILLIAMS (USA)

 

Dr. Nicholas Enrico Williams is the assistant director of wind

studies, conductorof the Wind Ensemble, Brass Band, and the

director of athletic bands, including the North Texas Green Brigade

Marching Band and the Basketball Pep Band at the University of North

Texas. He is also the conductor for the GDYO Wind Symphony in Dallas,

Texas. In addition, he is a frequent guest conductor for the Dallas Winds

(formerly Dallas Wind Symphony) and the Dallas Winds Brass Choir. 

Dr. Williams is active in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Asia

as a clinician, conductor, adjudicator, consultant, and arranger;

his arrangements for wind band, marching percussion ensembles,

drum corps, and marching band are performed by outstanding

organizations throughout the world.
